I recently had the pleasure of photographing Hannah Sims, a wonderful equestrian based in Wiltshire, and her two charming equine loves, Brax and Tallulah. This shoot was particularly special to me, as Hannah’s down-to-earth approach to horsemanship mirrors my own.
Our session was held at Hannah’s location. Originally Hannah was worried that her location didn’t lend to an equine portrait shoot but I couldn’t have asked for more! Blessed with woodlands, long grass, and a stunning crop field (thank you to the very kind farmer who allowed us to go up the track lines, we were so careful!).
We even hacked down to a stunning shallow river for some of the shots, where the leaves and foliage added an extra layer of beauty.
I bring along a clothes rail to my shoots, this really helps to see all the clothes you bring to your session and we can choose the best 3 or 4 outfits to go for. Hannah provided incredible clothing options, allowing us to create three distinct looks for the shoot.
Hannah’s connection with her horses is very natural—they are true friends. She is easygoing and simply wants to have fun with them. If you follow her on social media, especially TikTok, you’ll see how much she loves and enjoys her horses. Follow her @sillyprune
Brax, with his cheeky headcollar that says “Tw*t,” was foot perfect and loved being in front of the camera. Tallulah, full of sass and personality, is a pocket rocket full of love.
We shot for two hours at various spots on Hannah’s property—along the lane, in the long grass field, on the verge with purple pops of colour, at the entrance to the woodland, and on the edge of the crop field. The highlight was shooting at the shallow river, where Hannah rode Brax bareback through the water, resulting in some amazing shots. Ensuring the horses’ comfort, I never photograph longer than necessary and can read their body language to know when they are done.
Using one camera and one lens allows me to stay present and creative throughout the shoot.
My 18 years of experience as an equine photographer means my camera feels like an extension of my eyes. I focus on poses, styling, horse positioning, background, composition, lighting, and moments—all while guiding you through the shoot.
Working with all riders is a pleasure, as we share a common love for our horses.
I’m looking forward to more beautiful shoots this summer/autumn, including sessions in Holland, Boston, New York, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and all over the UK.
